Desktop icons turned into .lnk files

The following solution worked for me!

  • Type RegEdit 
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk 
  • Delete the UserChoice folder
  • Restart your computer


Note:  Take back up the FileExts folder before deleting the UserChoice Folder
